National Emma M. Nutt Day on September 1st honors the first woman telephone operator in the United States. Emma Nutt started working at the Edwin Holmes Telephone Dispatch Company in Boston on September 1, 1878, replacing teenage boys who were rude to callers. Her polite and efficient service set the standard, and within a few years, nearly all telephone operators were women.
