Spread awareness about the importance of our world's oceans and how to help conserve them.

June 8th

What Does #WorldOceansDay Mean?

World Oceans Day on June 8th is a global day of ocean celebration and action. The oceans cover over 70% of our planet and are home to an astounding variety of life. This day focuses on raising awareness about pollution, overfishing, and the critical need to protect marine ecosystems.

How to Use #WorldOceansDay

Share stunning ocean photography, post about marine conservation efforts, or highlight ways to reduce plastic waste. Strong tag for environmental organizations, travel brands, and ocean lovers.

Why World Oceans Day Matters More Than Ever

World Oceans Day is observed on June 8th every year, and its significance keeps growing. The United Nations officially recognized it in 2008, but the concept dates back to the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, where Canada first proposed a global day to honor the ocean. More than three decades later, the oceans are in worse shape than anyone at that summit imagined.

The numbers are staggering. Over 8 million tons of plastic enter the ocean every year - roughly one garbage truck’s worth every minute. Ocean temperatures hit record highs in 2024 for the second consecutive year. Coral bleaching events now happen five times more frequently than they did in the 1980s. And roughly 90% of large predatory fish populations, including tuna, swordfish, and sharks, have been depleted since the mid-20th century.

But this day is not just about doom statistics. It is about action, awareness, and the extraordinary resilience of marine ecosystems when humans give them a chance to recover.

The Ocean’s Role in Everything

Most people think of the ocean as a place for vacations and seafood. In reality, it runs the planet. The ocean produces over 50% of the world’s oxygen through phytoplankton - tiny organisms that most people have never heard of. It absorbs roughly 30% of the carbon dioxide humans produce and captures 90% of the excess heat from greenhouse gas emissions. Without the ocean acting as a buffer, average global temperatures would be significantly higher than they are today.

The ocean also drives weather patterns, supports the livelihoods of over 3 billion people who depend on marine and coastal biodiversity, and contains an estimated 91% of all species on Earth - most of which remain undiscovered. Scientists have explored less than 20% of the ocean floor, meaning we know more about the surface of Mars than we do about our own deep sea.

Conservation Wins Worth Knowing About

Not every ocean story is a grim one. Marine protected areas now cover roughly 8% of the global ocean, up from less than 1% in 2000. When areas are genuinely protected - meaning no fishing, no drilling, no dredging - marine life bounces back fast. A 2023 study in Nature found that fish populations inside well-managed marine reserves were on average 670% higher than in adjacent unprotected waters.

Whale populations provide another bright spot. Humpback whales in the South Atlantic have recovered from a few hundred individuals in the 1950s to an estimated 25,000 today. Gray whale populations along the Pacific coast have similarly rebounded. These recoveries happened because of direct, sustained international cooperation - proof that conservation works when the political will exists.

On the plastic front, over 70 countries have now enacted bans or restrictions on single-use plastics. Cleanup technologies like The Ocean Cleanup project have removed millions of kilograms of plastic from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. And consumer awareness has driven real shifts in packaging across food, beverage, and personal care industries.

Social Media Strategy for #WorldOceansDay

Environmental OrganizationsThis is one of your highest-engagement days of the year. Lead with impact stats and pair them with a clear call to action - sign a petition, donate, join a cleanup. Use #WorldOceansDay alongside #OceanConservation and #ProtectOurOceans. Video content showing before-and-after cleanup efforts performs especially well.
Travel & Dive BrandsPost your most stunning underwater photography. Carousels of marine life get strong saves and shares. Pair #WorldOceansDay with #UnderwaterPhotography, #ScubaDiving, and #MarineLife. Highlight responsible tourism practices to show you are not just selling trips but supporting the ecosystem.
Sustainable BrandsConnect your product to ocean health. If you use recycled ocean plastic, this is the day to tell that story. If you have eliminated single-use packaging, show your process. Use #WorldOceansDay with #SustainableLiving and #PlasticFree. Authenticity matters - avoid greenwashing and share specific, verifiable claims.
Food & Seafood AccountsHighlight sustainable seafood choices and ocean-friendly eating habits. Post about MSC-certified products, seasonal fish guides, or plant-based alternatives to overfished species. Pair #WorldOceansDay with #SustainableSeafood and #OceanFriendly. Educational content about which fish to avoid and why gets high engagement.
