What Is UN Russian Language Day?
UN Russian Language Day falls on June 6th, the birthday of Alexander Pushkin - the poet and novelist widely regarded as the founder of modern Russian literary language. The United Nations established this day in 2010 as part of a broader initiative to celebrate each of its six official languages (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish) with dedicated annual observances.
The goal is to promote multilingualism and cultural diversity across member states and the general public. Russian is spoken by approximately 258 million people worldwide, making it the eighth most spoken language globally. It is an official language in Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan, and is widely used across Central Asia and Eastern Europe.
Alexander Pushkin and the Russian Literary Tradition
Pushkin transformed Russian literature in the early 19th century. Before him, literary Russian was heavily influenced by Church Slavonic and French - the language of the aristocracy. Pushkin brought the living, spoken Russian of everyday people into poetry and prose, creating a literary language that was accessible, expressive, and distinctly Russian.
His works - including “Eugene Onegin,” “The Captain’s Daughter,” and “Boris Godunov” - remain foundational texts studied worldwide. But Pushkin’s legacy extends beyond his own writing. He opened the door for Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Chekhov, and every major Russian author who followed. Celebrating Russian Language Day on his birthday acknowledges that debt.
Why Russian Matters in Global Culture
Russian literature, music, ballet, cinema, and science have shaped global culture in profound ways. From Tchaikovsky and Stravinsky in music to Tarkovsky and Eisenstein in film, Russian-language contributions span every artistic discipline. In science, Russian was the language of the space race - Yuri Gagarin’s first words from orbit were in Russian.
Today, Russian remains one of the most important languages for international diplomacy, space cooperation (it is mandatory for ISS astronauts), and academic research in fields from mathematics to linguistics. Learning even basic Russian opens doors to a rich cultural tradition and a vast body of untranslated works.
